The Do’s and Don’ts of Wearing Kyle Braces and Kyle Invisalign

When you choose Oldham Family Orthodontics in Kyle, you’re already on the right path to achieving a long-lasting, beautiful smile! To ensure you’re doing everything possible to keep your teeth clean and healthy, we’ve got some important do’s and don’ts you should follow whether you’re in Kyle braces or Kyle Invisalign.

DO Brush Your Teeth After You Eat

With Buda braces, food can get caught in between wires and lodged in brackets. Not only is it super uncomfortable, but the longer that food sits there, the more plaque and bacteria will build up inside your mouth. That’s why it is vital to brush your teeth after every meal. Storing an extra toothbrush and small travel-sized toothpaste in your backpack or purse is a great way to make sure you always have the tools you need to get out the food and debris trapped in your mouth.

If you’re wearing Buda Invisalign, you’ll want to remove your aligners when you eat. You will want to brush your teeth after you’re finished. Food particles that are stuck in your teeth and gums can rub against your aligners or cause them to not fit as tightly as they should. Since your aligners should be worn about 22 hours a day for the best results, pop your Buda Invisalign trays back in when you’ve finished eating and brushing.

DO Floss Every Day

Just like brushing your teeth makes for good oral hygiene, flossing helps reduce plaque and remove bacteria from your mouth. Flossing daily also reduces the likelihood of tooth decay and gum disease. Carry floss with you so you can get out those tricky pieces of food that a brush isn’t able to. You may not need to floss after every single meal as long as you’re doing it daily, but it’s a good idea to have it on hand just in case.

DO Keep Your Kyle Orthodontic Appointments

It’s so important to make and keep all of your Kyle appointments with your Kyle orthodontist to make sure your treatment plan is progressing as it should. If you have Kyle braces, your orthodontist in Kyle will want to exchange your rubber bands with fresh ones every couple of weeks. Your Kyle orthodontist will also check your wires and brackets so that they continue to apply gentle pressure to move the teeth in the right direction.

If you’re currently undergoing Buda Invisalign treatment, your in-person appointments may not be as often as every couple of weeks. However, attending your appointments is just as crucial because your Kyle orthodontist will see how your teeth are progressing and determine if it’s time to move you into a new set of Buda Invisalign aligners. Failing to see your Kyle orthodontist for your scheduled appointments means your treatment will be prolonged and you may not see your results as quickly as you’d like to.

DON’T Eat Sticky or Crunchy Foods

When you get Kyle braces on, you’ll be given a list of foods to stay away from, including overly sugary snacks like lollipops and sticky and crunchy foods such as popcorn and chewing gum. Your Kyle orthodontist wants you to avoid these foods so that your brackets will stay where they need to be and wires won’t be displaced. A piece of gum may seem harmless, but it can stick to your brackets and cause them to come off if you chew it often enough.

With Buda Invisalign, you are more free to eat what you want, as long as you do so without your aligners in. It can be a pain to remove them every time you put something in your mouth only to put them back in again, but trying to eat food with aligners will damage them and wear away the material. Just don’t do it!

DON’T Drink Coffee or Soda with Kyle Braces or Buda Invisalign

Drinks like soda can increase the amount of acid and sugar on your teeth. With Kyle braces it’s best to stick to drinking water or milk, and limit the number of carbonated beverages you consume. Buda Invisalign wearers should stay away from drinking soda or coffee with aligners in, because it can actually discolor your trays and eat away at them. Your safest bet whether you’re in Kyle braces or Kyle Invisalign is to simply stick with drinking water.

DON’T Remove Your Rubber Bands

Rubber bands are used in our orthodontic office to correct the way your teeth fit together, otherwise known as your bite. You’ll probably need elastics if you have misalignments of your top and bottom teeth, like an overbite or underbite. Most often these rubber bands are used with traditional Kyle braces, but people with Kyle Invisalign sometimes need them, too. You should not remove your rubber bands during the day just because they cause you some discomfort. They are essential to correcting your bite and helping you achieve the smile you want. Your rubber bands may not look attractive, but once your treatment is complete it will all be worth it!

DO Keep Smiling!

Whether you have Kyle braces or Kyle Invisalign, don’t forget to smile throughout your treatment time! Studies have shown that the physical act of smiling not only creates internal positive feelings, but also causes participants to see the world around them in a more positive way (verywellmind.com/news-science-shows-smiling-really-does-make-us-feel-better). “By far the most professional service I encountered when I searched for the right orthodontist for my daughter. From the second we walked in, we knew this was the right place to be. The staff made us feel comfortable from the get go and Dr Oldham was very in depth with the initial examination and explanation of the procedures. Dr Oldham uses the latest technology in his exams and allows you to see a time lapse of the process which is very impressive. Highly recommend Oldham Family Orthodontics . . . ” –Google Review from Albert M.
